Nervous Children, Treatment with Sedation
We specialise in providing comfortable dental experiences for nervous children. Our skilled dentist ensures that your child feels at ease during their visits, creating a positive association with dental care. We offer treatment with sedation when needed, ensuring a stress-free experience.
Children need extra care and treatment so that their fear of dental treatment can be eliminated, and their treatment must be completed to a very high standard so that the treatment is not repeated.
Children should be constantly motivated in prevention regimes to avoid active treatments being necessary in the first place.
Dr. Prableen Anand and Dr. Anina Chapman both will work together to provide your child with the best care possible. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is a gentle way of relieving your child’s anxiety.
For more complex treatments it may be necessary to use intravenous Sedation-IV. The advantage of this over a general Anaesthetic is that it is safer and your child is completely relaxed and able to remain conscious throughout the procedure.
We are happy for you to call and discuss treatment for your child over the phone.

Dr Anands Opinion:
Should Parents Avoid their child having treatment with General Anaesthetic, and why?
The disadvantage of the use of GA and heavy sedation is that it does not help with reinforcing good and positive dental behaviour /experience a child might have had; they don’t remember their easy pain-free dental treatment.
Not helping children overcome their anxiety, which will carry on to adulthood, leads to poor dental health, need orthodontics later/ may not be avail on NHS and become costly for parents……
However, there are some children that just cannot cope with treatment even if sedated and will need GA. GA is valid for them but comes with its risks, so best to avoid it if possible with good behaviour management techniques/skills.
Can you manage these children in your clinic?
With good behaviour management skills, I have been trained as a Paediatric dentist and inhalation sedation (IS). Inhalation sedation is the sedation of choice for children including young children and is different from IV sedation which is mainly the sedation used in some sedation clinics.
It is done by using laughing gas; the same as ‘gas and air’ used by mums when in labour; very safe for children. It only takes anxiety away, the child is kept awake throughout treatment and still needs local anaesthetic.
