What is TMJ?

There are many symptoms that you can suffer from this disorder and it is mainly due to the fact that you are clenching or grinding your teeth at night without being aware. You can get headaches and dizzinessfeel sleepy during the day or even experience facial pain or toothaches.

With TMJ Dysfunction you may go on to develop pain every time you talk, chew, or yawn. You may have ear pain, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and hearing loss. You may develop wear and tear causing arthritic changes in the joint.

Migraines and Headaches and all the other symptoms mentioned can be relieved by the treatment of TMJ DysfunctionDr. Ahmed is able to diagnose if you have this disorder at your initial consultation and start treatment.

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the term used if you are grinding your teeth whilst asleep. Due to this unnatural habit, too much stress is being placed on the teeth and the jaw joints, as well as the face and head muscles. This can then cause pain in the facial, neck, shoulder, and back muscles; and jaw joints.

The teeth themselves will become worn down and damaged or start moving.

What is the treatment for TMJ disorder and Bruxism?

Treatment should begin when it is in the early stages to avoid the symptoms from worsening, you must seek advice. A simple examination can be done at your routine dental check-up to see if you are grinding or clenching your teeth at night.

In order to treat patients and relieve them of their symptoms, they must understand the cause.

When the lower jaw lines up perfectly with the upper jaw and your bite is functioning normally, everything is fine and working harmoniously. If the lower jaw does not line up properly, or, perhaps more importantly, if there is abnormal stress present when the lower jaw contacts the upper jaw, problems can occur, and whilst asleep the brain sends signals to the jaw to start grinding the teeth in order to achieve a more comfortable position/ bite.

Patients with temporomandibular joint problems don’t have to face jaw pain, migraines, and trouble sleeping any longer. Dr.Ahmed will first need to thoroughly evaluate your TMJ problem and identify the cause. Most patients benefit from a Mouthguard device worn at night. This is used to alleviate symptoms of an uneven bite.

This will ease muscle tension and decrease any pain. The device will protect your natural teeth from wear and drifting, moving, and fracture.

What is dental Equilibration?

If a patient’s teeth don’t fit and slide together in harmony, one or more of these muscle groups may begin to suffer from fatigue, this may be felt as headaches, eye pain, shoulder pain; or pain from any of the muscle groups described above. This will also induce or trigger the need to grind the teeth or clench them whilst asleep. Your daily/ work stress levels are known to make matters worse.

This treatment involves removing the interferences which cause your teeth to meet in an imperfect manner and thus reduces the trigger for Bruxism (grinding) and clenching. This is done gently with the use of stress indicator papers and smoothing the teeth into a better shape.

How can Low-Level Laser Therapy help?

TMJ dental laser

A dental laser is used to alleviate the pain and stimulate healing in any damaged cells. The dental laser is painless and encourages biostimulation and biomodulation.

This is used in conjunction with the Mouthguard splint therapy to achieve results faster.

How can Surgery on the Jaw Joint help?

When all other treatments fail to assist the patient, then surgery within the joint itself is undertaken to relieve the joint pain. Only about 1% of patients require joint surgery and Dr. Ahmed is able to diagnose those problems that will benefit from surgery. Your comfort and dental health are important to your quality of life.

Early diagnosis of TMJ syndrome and the treatment of the poor alignment of the teeth and diagnosis of Bruxism will allow you to avoid developing the pain and discomfort associated with joint pain. With every dental examination- our patients are also examined for TMJ signs.
